The pavilion is made of filtered lake water shot as a fine mist through 13,000 fog nozzles creating an artificial cloud that measures 300 feet wide by 200 feet deep by 65 feet high. A built-in weather station controls fog output in response to shifting climatic conditions such as temperature, humidity, wind direction, and wind speed.

With that this nozzle could act as a cooling machine during summer and much research be done on how this evaporative cooling process could be achieved, and how this could interfer with the activities on site.

Wind Carrying Haze to my country

Looking at the difference one could see this is not apparently mist or hog, however haze. I personally call this the Malaysia “Haze Festival” as it comes every year at a certain month.

This is no natural phenomenon but due to ~~ungovernable and lawless~~ deforestation through burning. This require the littlest effort in clearing the forest and provide good fertilisers on the site for re-cultivation. coincidentally the wind is blowing towards Malaysia, thus every year for an entire month my country is blanketed with a layer of thick chocking haze. Everyone suffers, health worsen, perceivable level drops, traffic grown, airplane delayed, evidently the country is put in an unwelcoming image to its visitors. Anyone mention about global warming?…..however the point here is an example of natural phenomenon of the air circulation process which trigger movement of air carrying small particles with it.

_Variety of form_

Branching form

Given all the results of my investigations with Branching system, i was able to create seemingly infinite variety of tree form by simply adjusting a few parameters. The next step was to select a single form to be developed into design proposal for the prototype. The brief was open for interpretations for the design of summer Biennale in front of London City Hall.

By changing the parameter (rotation in x-y-z axis) on the primary branch, I could seamlessly change the entire form as all the secondary branches grow and follows the coordinates on the segment on the primary branches.

_Logic System of Branching element_

The above shows the descriptions of parameters for which i have been using for the prototype. Having gained an understanding of how the prototype operated in real world, contraint by it physical state and material, i extended my studies into 3d models. The logic i discovered and developed in physical models were directly applicable in digital model. It is also to explore the form making potential according to the wind shape produced.

_Physical Model to Digital Model_

Discovery of Pattern Generated

During each stage of the research i was considering the architectural potential of the prototype. In order to make the wind pattern controlable, I had to test it it in artificial environment in Maya Fluid Test. The key task was a discovery i made when experimenting with altering the curvature and and number of section of the primary branches that define the number of secondary branches.

by changing the “flap” of the primary baranch i could change the rotation axis of first secondary bracnches which are inter-related to the second, the third and so forth.

The site bearing strong wind. It is crucial to have a strong structure to stand against the wind to have little or no maintanence during the prototype lifespan. TLFA brief also note the requirement to have a safe structure despite the strong current on the GLA site. Technical consideration has to be involved.

Santiago Calatrava

STRUCTURE

Work by Architect Santiago Calatrava in Valencia, Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències.Though much of his work focused on aesthetic and much similiar look to my prototype,one wonder how it would look like if it is based on parametric design approach.Much critisms were made due to its impracticality and structurally unstable,which i should take into consideration when building my machine.

The future transit hub at the World Trade Center site in New York City, to be completed in 2009. This is an early rendering. Theproject being built has much shorter spires.

Angel Station and Exhibition in Bartlett.

An interesting structure built at Angel, Islington. The structure was built using steel, like the joints in an umbrella. Another example here showing a prototype built in Bartlett, London.Both these shows how branches can be attached using different material, which how later be investigated. JOINTS

I wanted the prototype to work in a tradition way, a way which does not require any electricity. So i started to investigate on Leonardo’s Machine and Theo Jansen’s Mechanism to see how these both could be made to capture wind energy, to store it for releasing the fine water.

Riverside Walk- More London (LB Southwark)Exhibition area in front of gym and west of GLA and the ScoopLandowners: More London EstatesNeighbour to some of London’s most important photographed places: Tower Bridge, the Thames andthe Tower of London, More London sits in an enviable location. With the recent addition of the GLAbuilding’s sleek organic form, an intervention on this site would have as its backdrop a series ofstunning icons. Smooth dark granite forms the landscape around the interventions site, therefore acontrast to this monochrome hardness would be desirable in the intervention design. Colour, softness,natural materials should all be considered, alongside the Thames as inspiration for the vitalimportance on this site. Notable Information

The site has a very high footfall at all times of day, particularly at weekends, therefore wearand tear should be a key consideration and designs should be robust.

A key consideration is wind as it can become very blustery due to the Thames andsurrounding tall buildings. Therefore interventions should consider wind loads carefully.

Health and safety due to the higher footfall should be considered carefully, in particular duringsetup and removal.

The LFA will coincide with the free music and film events at the Scoop.

Public and Employees liability insurance will be required.

Signage associated with the intervention may contain logos of sponsors but should not directlyadvertise companies.

Signage will require approval by Move London Estates (allow 2 weeks)

Move London may offer a contribution up to £2000 to intervention teams depending on designquality.

The Brief

Cooling Rainbow

site: Riverside Walk- More London (LB Southwark)
Exhibition area in front of gym and west of GLA and the Scoop

The system will consist of nozzles projecting fine water drops onto Riverside Walk infront of the City Hall. This not only will surprise and delight passers/by visitors to LFA 2008 at the site, it will also presents a nice panorama view as the fine water drops not only cools the passers/by visitors during the summer, but occasionally creates an arc of coloured light in the sky caused by refraction of the sun’s rays by the fine water drops.
A key consideration is wind as it can become a stimulant for creating fine water pattern along the Riverside Walk.

• The LFA will coincide with the free music and film events at the Scoop.(from the brochure)
In the summer More London put on a programme of free entertainment in the Scoop which has included lunchtime music, film showings and performances of plays for children and adults

The project becomes more potential when it creates a relationship with the event of the site. The machine could be manipulated by music during the event, or possibly a machine that could interact with the pedestrian.
This process offers the opportunity to excite local and young people about the machine.

This will become a great opportunity for my team to learn from the experience of working
together in such multi-disciplinary teams.
